Amiga’s Last Refuge

Posted on July 4, 2026 by Rumblefish

If you love Deluxe Galaga, put this at the top of your list. Last Refuge is a vertical blaster that came from the shareware scene and absolutely punches above its weight.

The moment it fires up, you’re met with a surprisingly slick presentation: colourful, chunky parallax starfields, detailed enemy sprites, and some genuinely excellent copper-shaded backdrops. It looks like a late-era commercial title, not a budget bedroom release. Gameplay is pure, no-nonsense shooter bliss. The ship controls are perfectly tight, the weapon upgrades are satisfyingly chunky (spread shots, lasers, a roaring flame-thrower), and the onslaught of enemy waves feels relentless but always fair. It never devolves into bullet-hell chaos, instead letting you weave through patterns with a real sense of flow. The AI won’t write a thesis, but the enemy movement and attack formations are cleverly scripted to keep you constantly on the move, enemies sweep in, peel off, and snipe at you with just the right amount of aggression.

The soundtrack is middle hardcore. Thumping, driving mod tunes that wouldn’t feel out of place in Turrican, perfectly matching the on-screen action and pushing the Amiga’s Paula chip hard. Sound effects are crisp and punchy. Between the visuals, audio, and responsive controls, it’s a total package. If there’s a fault, I honestly can’t find one. It’s an absolute joy and easily rivals the genre’s big names.
