Amiga’s Wasted Dreams

Posted on July 4, 2026 by Rumblefish

Released in 1999, Wasted Dreams arrived when the Amiga was commercially dead and buried. Yet here was Digital Dreams Entertainment, a Croatian team, pouring their hearts into a game that would become one of the platform’s most ambitious late-era releases.

It’s an isometric action-adventure that channels Flashback and Dreamweb, wrapped in a sci-fi epic that feels almost defiantly out of time. And remarkably, it works. The isometric worlds of Wasted Dreams are richly detailed, and the rotoscoped animations are genuinely cinematic. The intro sequence alone, rendered in high-quality CGI, sets a tone few Amiga games ever matched.

It’s the kind of visual feast that makes you forget you’re playing on hardware from 1985. The game supports both ECS and AGA chipsets, and while it runs on a base 68000 with 3MB of RAM, the AGA version delivers the full visual experience. The voice acting, however, is notoriously awful—one person apparently voiced every single character. It’s jarring, amateurish, and detracts from the otherwise professional presentation. But in a strange way, it adds to the game’s cult charm. You’ll either cringe or laugh, but you won’t forget it.

You control one or two characters (or play co-op with a friend) in a top-down isometric world. The story sees two crew members crash-landing on an alien planet after their ship explodes. You explore, collect items, solve puzzles, talk to NPCs, and defend yourself against hostile aliens. Combat is simple: find a gun, manage limited ammo, or punch enemies up close. A single context-sensitive button handles most interactions—shoot, examine, pick up—making it surprisingly accessible. Gameplay is fluid and player-friendly, though the difficulty can be punishing.
