Wings by Cinemaware is a classic video game that has stood the test of time. The game was first released in 1990 and has since become a beloved classic among retro gaming enthusiasts.
Wings by Cinemaware is not just a game; it’s an unforgettable journey into the heart of World War I aviation that has captivated players since its original release on the Amiga.
The remastered edition breathes new life into this classic, offering both nostalgia and a fresh experience for a new generation of gamers. From the moment you take to the skies, Wings immerses you in a beautifully crafted world filled with stunning graphics and an evocative soundtrack that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the Great War. The remastered version enhances these elements, making every dogfight and bombing run visually striking while maintaining the charm of the original. The updated graphics are a significant improvement, allowing players to appreciate the intricate details of their biplanes and the landscapes below.
The gameplay is straightforward yet engaging, featuring a mix of first-person dogfights, top-down bombing missions, and isometric strafing runs. This variety keeps the experience fresh and exciting. As you progress through the 230 missions, each one unfolds with a narrative depth that is rare in games of this genre. The journal entries detailing your pilot’s journey add emotional weight to your missions, making you feel personally invested in their fate.
One of the standout features of Wings is its accessibility. While it offers challenges, especially as you face more formidable enemies, it remains approachable for players of all skill levels. The controls are intuitive, allowing you to focus on the thrill of flying rather than wrestling with complex mechanics. Whether you choose onscreen or tilt controls, the gameplay remains fluid and enjoyable.
However, it’s worth noting that some may find the missions repetitive after extended play sessions. While each mission is fun in short bursts, seasoned players might crave more complexity and depth as they progress. Yet, this simplicity can also be seen as part of its charm—Wings! captures the essence of arcade gaming from an era when fun was paramount.
Wings by Cinemaware is a masterclass in blending storytelling with engaging gameplay. It successfully transports players back to a time when flight combat was both thrilling and accessible. Whether you’re revisiting this classic or experiencing it for the first time, Wings! promises an exhilarating ride through history that will leave you longing for more time in the cockpit. Highly recommended for fans of aviation games and those looking to experience a piece of gaming history!

This is a technically very heavy strafing level: a huge train with lots of AA-guns attached, tons of trees and rain – windowed. A true worst-case level regarding performance on that crappy Radeon 9250 (which delivers worse than the RadeonM inside the sam440ep).
There are still optimizations left, but as you can see we’re on the safe side already.
