Dune 2 – The C64 Demake – Arok Edition

Posted on July 22, 2026 by Rumblefish

The Spice Must Flow at least…1 MHz…

Let’s be real for a second. When someone says “Dune II on the Commodore 64,” your first instinct should be to laugh. The original 1992 masterpiece from Westwood Studios needed a 286 with 640KB of RAM, a mouse, and enough processing power to simulate interplanetary economic warfare. The C64 has 64KB. Total. No mouse. A CPU that runs at roughly the speed of a sandworm taking a nap. And yet, here we are. Here we are. What Primal has pulled off with this demake is not just a port. It is a genuine act of computational necromancy. They have taken the granddaddy of real-time strategy, the game that defined a genre, and squeezed it into a machine that was obsolete when Dune II was still in diapers. The result is a technical marvel that actually works.
The first thing that hits you is the scrolling. A smooth four-direction scrolling battlefield on a C64, something that should not be possible without sacrificing everything else. But Primal found a way. The multicolor graphics use clever single-sprite trickery to punch way above the hardware’s weight class. It is not going to win any beauty contests against the DOS original, but that is not the point. The point is that Arrakis feels alive. The desert stretches out, the spice glimmers, and your base slowly rises from the sand like a worm breaching the surface.
And here is the kicker: 64 units and buildings. Any number of units on screen at once. No arbitrary limits, no “sorry, you have hit the sprite cap.” If you want to drown the Harkonnen in a tidal wave of infantry, the C64 will try its damnedest to make that happen.
The enemy AI in this demake is no joke. It manages its own economy, builds and produces units, defends its base, and, here is the scary part, counter-attacks when provoked. No mercy. This is not some dumb opponent that sits there waiting to be steamrolled. The AI fights back. It expands, it adapts, and if you poke it, it will bite your head off.

Let us not pretend this is a flawless experience. The C64 is still a C64.
Dune II on the C64 was supposed to be impossible. Two screenshots exist of a canceled port from back in the day, and for decades, that was all anyone had. The general consensus was that an RTS like this could never work on the 8-bit machine. Primal looked at that consensus and said, “Hold my beer.”

When we see shit games published nowadays for the Commodore machines we totally avoid to mention them in any possible manner, because it is a shame to not push “nowadays” these machines to the extreme. This game is proof that the Commodore 64 still has tricks up its sleeve, that the scene is alive and kicking, and that sometimes the best way to honor a classic is to rebuild it from scratch on hardware that has no business running it.

Future updates promise more maps, more units, and more gameplay improvements. If this is what version 1.0 looks like, I genuinely cannot wait to see what comes next.

The spice must flow. And now, on a C64, it finally does.
