Golden Axe is a classic side-scrolling fantasy beat ’em up game developed by Sega. Released by Sega in 1989, this fantasy hack-and-slash masterpiece pits three warriors—Ax Battler (barbarian), Tyris Flare (amazon), Gilius Thunderhead (dwarf)—against the evil Death Adder’s minions across six brutal levels. Mounted on chicken legs or blue dragons, you unleash magic potions for screen-clearing fireballs, grab endless pots of gold from defeated foes, and compete for high-score glory via two-player co-op. Tight controls, vibrant sprites, and thumping chiptune soundtrack make every quarter well-spent.
## Amiga Port
The 1989 Ocean release shines brightest here, nearly matching arcade perfection with smooth 50Hz scrolling, full-color graphics, and responsive joystick action. Magic feels potent, dragons obey crisply, and the two-player mode splitscreen seamlessly—ideal for local duels. Soundtrack roars with digitized samples; minor slowdowns in boss fights barely detract from its status as a 16-bit conversion king.
## C64 Version
Also Ocean’s 1989 effort, it punches above its 8-bit weight with solid scrolling (despite sprite multiplexing flicker), punchy collisions, and that iconic music via SID chip wizardry. Graphics hold up via clever dithering, though colors mute slightly and co-op flickers more.
