Green Beret never got a full conversion for Amiga 500 for decades but now all changed…
Between Unreal and Agony, we started working on a prototype of a game using Yves new tile-based editor (that was also used to create Agony). We were great fans of the Green Beret arcade game by Konami, and we talked with Ubisoft about doing a game with similar gameplay but in a more modern setting. One can presume Ubisoft at some point made this idea come true with the Tom Clancy games series.
However, Ubisoft’s interest faded out quickly and the project was abandoned. We moved on with the development of Agony.
I had produced a title screen (above) to setup the mood and look & feel for the game and tease the publisher. I used the same technique as in Agony, full blown overscan image in half-brite 64 color mode created in DeluxePaint III. All done pixel by pixel with a mouse.
Some work had been done on editing the first level, but to this date I have not been able to relaunch the editor. I only managed to recover a few test images and some concept sketches so far.
A Green Beret clone for Amiga 500 was FireForce.
The Amiga 500 Green Beret, December 2022
Green Beret by Dante Retro Dev has been updated with new features and fixes. The December 2022 version includes two selectable difficulty levels: “Normal” and “Arcade”. “Normal” has a lifebar, while “Arcade” is the same difficulty as previous versions. The update also includes minor improvements, such as a flag marking a “save point/spawn point” reached.
The August 2022 fix addresses a bug that caused the game to reset if the fire button was pressed during the cut-scene of the soldier jumping over the fence.
The May 2022 update added a “timeout jet” that appears and kills players instantly when they’re wasting time, preventing players from stalling the gameplay.
Other fixes include limiting blue soldiers to one shot and cleaning some pixel artifacts in the title screen’s background.
For those playing on the A500-MINI, the game requires WHDLoad Package v1.0.1, CD32 pad selected (GREEN button shots flamethrower), and Copper enabled. The game is available in ADF and WHDLoad formats. The WHDLoad installer for Green Beret is provided by JOTD.
Overall, the updates and fixes make Green Beret a more enjoyable and manageable game for players. The addition of selectable difficulty levels and minor improvements enhance the gameplay experience.
