Hunchback is a coin-op game developed by Century Electronics and published in arcades in 1983. The game is loosely based on the 1831 Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the player controls Quasimodo.
Hunchback is a classic coin-op platformer from 1983, loosely inspired by Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame. You play as the bell-ringing Quasimodo, swinging and climbing through gothic castle screens to rescue your beloved Esmeralda from a prison tower atop the walls. This flip-screen adventure tasks you with reaching the church bell on the far right of each non-scrolling level, dodging deadly obstacles like flames, blades, and gaps along the way. Graphics and sound punch above their era’s weight, delivering atmospheric medieval vibes with crisp sprites and eerie chimes. Century Electronics’ arcade hit was licensed to Ocean Software, who ported it to Commodore 64, Oric, ZX Spectrum (late 1983), and later Acorn Electron, Amstrad CPC, VIC-20, Dragon 32, and MSX. Its success spawned sequels Hunchback II: Quasimodo’s Revenge and Hunchback: The Adventure on ZX Spectrum and C64, plus clones like Quasimodo on 8-bit machines. It even topped the UK sales charts. A must-play for retro enthusiasts—its bell-ringing triumphs still ring true decades later.
