>Planet of the Apes is a 1968 American science fiction film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, based on the 1963 French novel La Planète des singes by Pierre Boulle. The film stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter, James Whitmore, James Daly, and Linda Harrison. It was the first in a series of five films made between 1968 and 1973, all produced by Arthur P. Jacobs and released by 20th Century Fox.
In the sequel, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, another spacecraft crashes on the planet ruled by apes, carrying astronaut Brent who searches for Taylor and discovers an underground city inhabited by mutated humans with psychic powers. It was followed by Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
>The Trilogy was inspired by Planet of the Apes Novel by Pierre Boulle,
The Story begins with Jinn and Phyllis, apparently two astronauts in a quiet travel through the space that seeing an item floating over their ship (a bottle) decide to rescue and translate what will be revealed as a manuscript from inside the floating bottle,
it tells the adventure of three astronauts in 2500 :
the Journalist Ulysse Mérou invited by wealthy Professor Antelle to accompany him and his disciple, physician Arthur Levain to Betelgeuse. From time dilation, centuries pass on Earth for their two years in transit.
So they land on Soror (Sister) , with a shuttle , leaving the orbiting mother ship .
These are all the differences (both with the different final scene of the trilogy) between the original trilogy novel and the movies series .
It is worth to watch them , especially the first two movies ,
because they contain an high valuable message to mankind :
do not play with Science , Do not play with the Unknown ,
Don’t act as A Clone of the Gods because the wrong button , the wrong decision ,
will make change forever either the species and the physiognomy of the planet .
The last and most interesting message that you may comprehend
by watching the films or reading the book is the riveting concept
that living beings have of science and common sense :
The scientist apes absolutely don’t accept any idea that may bring back
their evolution from humans although the astronauts and the doll artifact with human form let think the opposite , and , as you can watch in the third movie ,
it’s clear that intelligent apes were created by humans according to their image and likeness.
Nowadays this concept is brought to us by Ancient Aliens theory in the same way.
Deviations from the novel
The film deviated from the original French novel in a number of ways:
-The hero is not a French journalist named Ulysse Mérou, but an American astronaut named Colonel George Taylor.
-The humans wear primitive clothing of animal skins, although they were naked in the novel.
-The technology and general settings of the apes’ towns are more primitive than in Boulle’s original concept. This was a deliberate decision to reduce design and construction costs. Architectural elements were based on observations of ancient cave cities.
-The apes speak perfect English, while they spoke a wholly different language in the book.
-Ulysses has to learn it to get acquainted, while in the movie, Taylor has a throat wound which prevents him from speaking at first.
-The Planet of the Apes is indeed Earth, although in the original novel it is a different planet that is very similar, Sorer (Latin “Sister” of the Earth). However, Earth is featured later in the novel which followed a similar path as the earth in the film.
-Boulle would later go on to say that he wished he had thought of Serling’s ending.
