The Last Ninja is an action-adventure game originally developed and published by System 3 in 1987 for the Commodore 64. Other format conversions were later released for the Apple IIGS, MS-DOS, BBC Micro and Acorn Electron in 1988, the Apple II in 1989, the Amiga and Atari ST and ZX Spectrum (as Last Ninja Remix) in 1990, and the Acorn Archimedes in 1991.
The Last Ninja series for the Commodore 64 and Amiga is a true gem in the world of retro gaming. The combination of adventure, action, and puzzle elements makes these games a must-play for any gaming enthusiast. The attention to detail in both the visuals and the music is truly remarkable, with Level 3 (The Water City) being a standout in terms of music.
The Last Ninja Remix, a remade C64 game ported from the Atari ST, is a testament to the quality of the series, with its combat being particularly noteworthy.
Last Ninja 2 for the C64 is praised for its visually and musically great experience, earning an overall score of 10/10. Even compared to the Amiga and ST, the original version of The Last Ninja plays very smoothly, showcasing the timeless quality of the gameplay.
The Last Ninja was one of the most successful games released on the Commodore 64. As the first in the Last Ninja series, it set the standard for the unique look and feel for its sequels: Last Ninja 2 and Last Ninja 3.
LAST NINJA REMAKES
The Last Ninja Engine by SoA (aka Spirit of Armakuni)
The engine is the most advanced, fully functional, and provides a gaming experience identical to LN1, including the controls, levels, and swamps, successfully capturing the old LN feeling. The editor is reported to be user-friendly, with the hope that everyone can create their own Last Ninja game. The latest version (v9.02) includes the editor and one level, but the four levels from v8.51 are incompatible, so only the first level was redone and included. V8.51 is still available for download to enjoy the full “The Legend of the Sade” game.

LAST NINJA REDUX
Last Ninja Redux is a new fan remake based on all three of the Last Ninja games, which were released on various platforms back in the day. Most noticeably the Commodore 64. Created using the game engine Unity, you will straight away notice some similarity’s to the original game but with more polished graphics. In this early work in progress demo, you can play a couple of rooms in first and third person aspect. As this was only recently announced today, it’s pretty much in Alpha stages and currently has no music, that said, it’s still good fun to play around with so far and I’m sure in due time, this will turn out to be a wonderful remake! Stay tuned for further updates from Vitno! You can download the first playable version from the link below.
