Lunar Rescue Remakes

Lunar Rescue is a unique and challenging shooter/action game that was released in 1979 for arcades.

Lunar Rescue stands out as a pioneering arcade shooter that blends rescue mechanics with perilous navigation, predating modern “search-and-rescue” games by decades. Released amid Taito’s golden era—alongside hits like Space Invaders—it tasks players with piloting a lunar lander through asteroid fields, gravitational pulls, and cavernous moonscapes to scoop up stranded astronauts, then blasting off amid enemy fire. This multi-stage format (descent, rescue, ascent, escape) innovates on the era’s shoot-’em-ups, demanding precision throttle control and split-second timing.
The core loop captivates with its unforgiving physics simulation: throttle too hard and you crash; hesitate, and aliens pick off your cargo. Stages escalate brilliantly—early levels tease with open space, later ones cram tight tunnels with bouncing hazards. Controls feel responsive on original cabinets (two joysticks: one for thrust/rotation, one for shooting), though home ports like Apple II and C64 dilute the tactile thrill. Difficulty spikes are masterful, turning quarter-munching frustration into addictive “one more try” mastery, without modern safety nets.
Graphics, vector-sharp for 1979, use stark black-space contrasts and minimal sprites effectively—lunar craters pulse with threat, astronauts’ parachutes a fleeting hope. Sound design shines: metallic clanks, thrusting roars, and triumphant fanfares amplify tension, primitive chiptunes be damned.

#Legacy and Curiosities

Developed by Taito’s arcade wizards, Lunar Rescue hit arcades globally, spawning ports to Apple II (1980), C64 (1982), and even Japanese PC-88. Contemporary reviews split: Electronic Games hailed its “novel concept,” while others griped at repetition (fair, as high scores loop stages). Yet it birthed a cult: emulated in MAME, name-dropped in Stranger Things (Season 3 arcade scene), and rebooted as Lunar Rescue Mission (iOS/Android, 2019)—a faithful update with 60+ levels, leaderboards, and Retina polish.
Perfect for retro enthusiasts craving Asteroids depth minus the monotony, or your Amiga/C64 setup. Hunt originals on eBay (cabs fetch $2K+); play free via browser emulators. A testament to arcade ingenuity—simple rules, infinite peril.

The Remakes

Solar Rescue Denetsu has beautiful graphics and excellent sounds. The objective is simple just to rescue the astronauts .On a downside, after I rescue the astronauts, I cannot make it safety to the carrier. It is difficult to return back to the carrier.I only managed to return once.Who knows maybe you can fared better than me?

Author Description
Emergency, emergency, natural disasters are occurring all over the Solar System! As a member of the Solar Response Team, travel to the moon, Mars, and Europa as you lift stranded astronauts out to safety, watch out for strong winds, falling rocks and gas vents as you negotiate the hazardous terrain. Watch your fuel as you fight the gravity… But hey it shouldn’t be a problem for an ace pilot like yourself!

This is a remake of a remake of Lunar Rescue a game by Taito… Originally the Title was being developed by A group called TSAP media headed by Dan “PulseCode” Owen, We picked it up from them once he had moved on to other things, Added some extra Gameplay features, two hidden modes, some new worlds and released it as Solar Rescue Denetsu Instead of Lunar Rescue Denetsu, We did not mess with the control Scheme that was orginally programmed by TSAP as they really wanted to leave it as is, This makes the game difficult at first but once you get the hang of it you will have no issues… Can you find the two hidden modes that are hiding amongst the Levels?

Controls : Arrows keys, ctrl to fire
