The Monty Mole series is a collection of platformer games developed by Gremlin Graphics, primarily for the Commodore 64 (C64) and ZX Spectrum home computers. The series includes several games, each with its unique storyline and gameplay mechanics.
Wanted: Monty Mole (1984): The first game in the series, released for both the C64 and ZX Spectrum. It features a coal mine setting where the player controls Monty Mole, collecting coal and avoiding obstacles while navigating through the mine. The game was well-received, reaching number 2 in the all-formats sales charts and winning the readers’ award for best platform game in 1984.
Monty on the Run (1985): In this game, Monty is on the run from the authorities after his involvement in the UK miners’ strike. The player must guide Monty through various environments, avoiding obstacles and enemies to reach the English Channel and freedom in Europe.
Auf Wiedersehen Monty (1987): In this installment, Monty travels around Europe collecting money to buy a Greek island where he can retire. The game features the same flip-screen platforming as before, but it was starting to seem old-fashioned by 1987.
Moley Christmas (1987): A covertape released with Your Sinclair magazine, where Monty is tasked with recovering the source code to his latest game and getting it to the duplication plant.
Impossamole (1990): A remake of Monty as a cape-clad superhero who is recruited by aliens to retrieve their sacred scrolls. This game marked a significant departure from the traditional platforming style of the series.
Monty: Revenge of the Mole (2013): A fan-made game developed by Steel Minions Studio, based on a winning design from a *Monty Mole* game design competition. The game was released to support the charity SpecialEffect, which helps physically disabled people play video games.
The Monty Mole series is notable for its unique blend of humor, exploration, and platforming mechanics. While the games may not hold up to modern standards in terms of gameplay, they are significant in the context of British gaming history and have a dedicated fan base.
