Rambo is a 1985 video game based on the film Rambo: First Blood Part II. It was produced by Platinum Productions and published by Ocean Software for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and Commodore 64.
The Commodore 64 version’s music is by Martin Galway, incorporating melodies from the film’s score.
Several other games based on the film were also released, including Rambo for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and Rambo: First Blood Part II for the Sega Master System.
The cold war has begun. There never was a war between the two super-powers, but there were conflicts, civil unrests, police actions… where the US armed forces fought the spread of communism (supported by the USSR). One such battlefield was Vietnam.
The USA lost the war in Vietnam, which brought forth some social phenomena never seen before. Rambo is a very good example of this.
The movie tells us of John J. Rambo – a veteran of the Vietnamese war. Upon his return to the homeland he is being mistreated and after being pushed too far, he starts fighting back. Being a human killing machine, the local police force is way out of their league.
In the sequel to the movie Rambo decided to accept a mission to return to Vietnam, where a POW camp is found. The mission should be a failure. The camp should be empty and the mission should only server to prove there’s no POWs left. But the camp is not abandoned and Rambo succeeds in rescuing the unfortunate souls. This was also the considered the movie with the highest number of casualties and the one that forever presented the image of Rambo as a cold-blooded killed (an image completely detached from the truth – but the one that was the most appealing to the masses). It is this image the game is based upon as well.
You play Rambo, a commando sent to Vietnam to free the POWs.
In the first part of the mission you need to shoot, blast and stab your way through the jungle to a helicopter.
Once you get to it, you need to fly it back to the POW camp and free the poor captives.
Finally you need to fly the helicopter back to safety, but be careful, you’ll encounter a MIG on the way!
All in all the game is a good shooter, which capitalized on the bloody action part of the Rambo saga and in a way even contributed to this bloodthirsty image of a gook-killing commando. Unfortunately it overshadowed the real story, the real message of Rambo, but I guess that won’t let anyone spoil the fun!
