Space Invaders Remakes

Space Invaders (スペースインベーダー Supēsu Inbēdā?) is a classic arcade game that was first released in 1978. It is a fixed shooter game where the player controls a laser cannon and is tasked with destroying waves of alien invaders while avoiding their projectiles.

Space Invaders, Tomohiro Nishikado’s 1978 masterpiece, isn’t just a game—it’s the spark that ignited the global video game revolution. Droves of pixelated aliens descend relentlessly from the top of the screen, forcing you to dodge, weave, and blast back with your lone turret tank. What starts as a deceptively simple shoot-’em-up spirals into nail-biting intensity as enemy waves speed up, bunkers crumble, and that iconic UFO bonus taunts you from above. The monochrome retro graphics and pulsating saucer synths haven’t aged a day; they evoke pure arcade nostalgia, pulling you into sweaty quarter-munching sessions. Easy to grasp in seconds—move, shoot, survive—but fiendishly hard to master. Speedrunning pros deploy “Zig-Zag” dodging and “Rapid Fire” barrages to chase world records, while casual players savor the addictive loop. Ports abound on everything from Atari to iOS, preserving its raw charm across eras. For retro enthusiasts or anyone craving pure, skill-honed fun, Space Invaders remains an absolute must-play.

Fun Curiosities:
Nishikado drew inspiration from Breakout and sci-fi films like *War of the Worlds*, birthing the fixed-shooter genre.
Its 1978 Japanese launch caused such a coin shortage that the government minted more—proving games could move economies.
The speeding enemies were a happy accident: removing graphic tiles boosted hardware speed, ramping tension organically.
Pop culture icon: Featured in *Futurama*, *Pixels*, and even the Smithsonian as a pivotal artifact.
Modern twists include competitive leaderboards and VR remakes, with pros hitting scores over 200,000 using precise “DKS” scoring tricks.
