Kennedy Approach-Red Storm Rising Remake

2009-02-01 Kennedy Approach v1.92 released !!
>Kennedy Approach is (or was) an ATC simulation game that first appeared on the C64 back in the eighties. It was the first game to use a speech engine (computer generated voice) which was quite an achievement for a 64kb game. It was probably the first ever realtime strategy game (RTS).
The game was also available on the Atari home computer and later on the Amiga. I’ve been waiting for a remake that never came. And eventually, I just made it myself.
And that’s what these pages are about: the Kennedy Approach remake for (windows) pc.
There are a lot of simular games (see links), however my remake looks the same, hears the same and plays the same as the original C64 version.
If you’re an Atari fan, you probably want the Atari colors, which is possible by changing the color scheme found in the ini file created by Kennedy Approach. There is a (default) C64 scheme (obviously!) and an Atari scheme.
The Game
Kennedy Approach is an Air Traffic Simulation game, in which you play the role of Air Traffic Controller (duh). It’s your job to guide airplanes to their destination. And safely. Some planes will just pass through your radar sector, others need to land at or take-off from the airport(s) in your sectors.
You can issue planes orders: climb/descend, turn left/right, clear to land and hold at VOR. Each order you issue is spoken out using the speech generator the game contains. Planes may not pass eachother to close, must exit your sector at a certain altitude and at its exit, must not fly into bad weather, must avoid mountains and no-fly zones (or fly high enough) and may not run out of fuel. All in all, the game becomes increasingly different as more and more planes appear.
Failing to do so might end your career and in some cases (wrong exit or crash) WILL end your career.
Three planes are featured, which travel at different speeds: the concorde being the fastest, then the boeing and lastly a cessna.

Release
Kennedy approach was released in 1985 (1986?) for the Commodore 64, Atari (8bit), in 1988 for the Atari ST and in 1989 for the Amiga. The game was published by Microprose (Microprose software Inc) and designed/developed by Andy Hollis. It featured computer generated voices (not digitized recorded voices) using the ESS (Electronic Speech Systems) engine.
